| On
the way crossing through
Rabat
and headed for Nigret we came across several
historical remnants such as these tombs. These catacombs were typically
used as underground Christian cemeteries and were common in the fourth
century A.D. There are other similar catacombs in
Malta
and a common component includes the presence of round
tables known as “agape tables”. These tables are carved from stone
with slanting sides on which mourners reclined to take part in a farewell
repast.
St Paul
’s catacombs in
Rabat
are a maze of narrow passages which date back to the
4th and 5th centuries. There is ample evidence that
Rabat
had a large Christian community during the Roman rule.
